Welcome to a special edition of The Alpha!

Here are ten women who are transforming the field of artificial intelligence, including pioneering new fields & research to advocating for government policy.

As AI continues to evolve, we need strong leadership to ensure we make good decisions in how we use AI and how these algorithms are created.

1. Allie K. Miller

Allie’s superpower is breaking down complex ML/AI topics into bite-sized content on Instagram and Tiktok.

Previously, she was the global head of machine learning business development for startups and venture capital for Amazon Web Services, and the first woman to build an AI product at IBM.

2. Cassie Kozyrkov

Cassie is the Chief Decision Scientist at Google, where she founded the field of decision science.

She has been LinkedIn’s top voice in data science and AI several years in a row!

3. Cortnie Abercrombie

Cortnie is the CEO and founder of AI Truth. Her work focuses on ethical and responsible data strategies, and how we can create AI models that take diversity into consideration.

Cortnie wrote the book on how artificial intelligence is transforming our lives, called What You Don't Know: AI's Unseen Influence in Your Life and How to Take Back Control.

4. Hélène Guillaume

Hélène is the founder of Wild.ai, a femtech startup that challenges the current male-dominated fitness market.

She has conducted extensive research on women’s health and built models to help women train and recover based on their menstrual cycle.

5. Dr. Joy Buolamwini

Joy is a computer scientist and founder of the Algorithmic Justice League. She is known for her research on bias in facial recognition technology.

Her research helped persuade Amazon, IBM, and Microsoft to put a hold on facial recognition technology until racial biases could be addressed.

6. Dr. Rana el Kaliouby

Rana is the co-founder and CEO of Affectiva, a pioneer in the new field of Emotion AI, models that combine facial expression with tone of voice to infer how a person is feeling.

She is also the author of Girl Decoded, a memoir on her journey as a scientist and a technologist.

7. Dr. Sara Hooker

Sara leads Cohere For AI, a non-profit research lab for complex machine learning problems that works on making large language models more efficient.

Before Cohere, she was a research scientist on Google Brain, Google’s deep learning artificial intelligence research team. 

8. Stephanie Ifayemi

Stephanie leads the UK Government’s work to pilot an International AI Standard, ensuring we have the right tools to promote the responsible development of AI.

She is also the Head of Policy for Partnership for AI, a non-profit partnership of academic, industry, and media organizations working on positive AI outcomes for people and society.

9. Tatyana Kanzaveli

Tatyana is the founder and CEO of the Open Health Network, a startup in a Big Data/Healthcare space. For her work in healthcare IT, Tatyana has spoken at the White House and the UN.

Tatyana was also a USSR chess champion!

10. Timnit Gebru

Timnit is an advocate for diversity in technology and co-founder of Black in AI, a community of Black researchers working in AI.

She has published countless research papers on the impact of AI, including as co-author on the paper finding that Black women were 35% less likely to be recognized by facial recognition software than White men.
