From Caitlin Jenner to Iggy Azalea- Inside The Celeb Memecoin Frenzy

Web3, AI and the creator economy in under 3 minutes per week!

Hey Alpha Fam! As we transition from spring to summer, I’m reaching out from NYC, where I’ll be all week, hopping between mental health retreats and Tech Week NY events – quite the spectrum, I know. There's a lot happening in the emerging tech space, so let's dive in!

The latest buzz in the crypto world? Celebrities are diving headfirst into the memecoins!

This past week has been a whirlwind with stars not just endorsing but actively creating and launching their own memecoins. From Caitlyn Jenner's meme coin to Iggy Azalea launching her own $MOTHER coin.

While many are skeptical about celebrities coming into the space again after years of backlash and scams endorsed by celebrities in the past, apparently, this time, it’s not all about quick gains.

Iggy Azalea has made headlines with her “anti-scam plans”, aiming to protect her fans and the broader community from the notorious pitfalls of the crypto world. Her recent efforts highlight a crucial aspect of this craze: the need for responsible promotion and genuine engagement.

These big names have also been hosting multiple Twitter Spaces, engaging in discussions, and building communities around their digital assets. Caitlyn Jenner has also touted in her own spaces that this is not a memecoin but a legit business, and she hopes to use her influence to further spread the adoption of cryptocurrencies along with her personal brand. Aside from that there is not much information out there about what she is trying to do with the memecoin specifically.

Yet, we have been there and done that when it comes to celebrities coming into Web3 and crypto, extracting, lacking transparency, and some even facing criminal charges because of it.

Will this time be any different?

🔥 My Hot Take:I love the excitement around emerging tech spaces and the potential of internet culture to unite people around innovation. However, I'm personally still skeptical about memecoins. While I hope these attempts support the space, my concern is that if they fail, it could harm the industry. I do see the potential of points and tokens as ways to gift and incentivize fans. If they are viewed this way, it can be great. But when they are seen as a get-rich-quick scheme, that's where I believe the idea will falter.
