Survive TikTok's Uncertainty: 7 Strategies to Diversify 🚀

Web3, AI and the creator economy in under 3 minutes per week!

Hey Alpha Fam! I recently reported about the latest TikTok developments.

As tensions swirl around the potential shutdown of TikTok, creators on the platform face uncertainty about their digital livelihoods. While the future of the app remains uncertain, there are several steps that content creators and even brands can take to diversify their online presence and revenue streams.

Here are 7 strategies creators should consider to diversify in the midst of a possible TikTok shutdown:

  1. Expanding on other platforms: While TikTok might be your primary stomping ground, creators should explore other platforms—specifically those that monetize—such as YouTube (via revenue sharing), Instagram (via brand deals), or Twitch (via gifting) to reach wider audiences and mitigate risks associated with platform dependence. Additionally, venturing into long-form content on these platforms is better for monetization.

  2. Owned and operated platforms: Investing in your own site or blog can provide creators with a stable digital hub independent of any social media platform. This allows them to control their content, engage with fans directly, and explore monetization options such as ad revenue, affiliate marketing, or selling digital products.

  3. Newsletters and chat groups: The key here is how to grow and connect with your community while owning the data. Newsletter platforms like Beehiiv are great and add paid subscriptions to monetize. Community text chat is also another option if you want numbers for texting.

  4. Subscription services and community building: In addition to Patreon, platforms like Mighty Networks and even NFTs allow community members to pay an additional fee for access to more content or perks.

  1. Online courses: I love this option as it allows for passive income around a subject matter that resonates with your audience and that you’re passionate about. It’s also evergreen; once you shoot and release it, the focus is promotion. You can also offer this to corporate clients separately. Some options for this are Teachable, Udemy, Skillshare, and more.

  1. Consulting and advising: After years of people picking my brain, I realized I was offering my services for free when I could be getting paid. I now consult or advise clients on everything I know—content, programming, social media strategy, influencer marketing, and more. This is one option we will see more of as companies want to lean into the creator economy; they should do so with creators (and by paying creators).

  2. BONUS! Events: Ticketed or sponsored events are a great source of community building and monetization, too, when done right.

🔥My Hot Take: Change is challenging, but acceptance is key. My friend Don Allen recently said on a panel that he changes his bio every 3 weeks. While that may seem extreme, it’s also about staying aware of our changing world and the best way to respond versus react is to be flexible. Long term, social media isn't going away, but I am investing in real-world connections and building smaller, quality communities like this newsletter.

His podcast, "WorkLife,” also dives into enhancing work culture through interviews and insightful stories, providing practical advice for a more fulfilling work experience.

Gentle reminder:

Isn’t it strange how we put off the simplest tasks, thinking they'll take longer, only to find they take a fraction of the time?
